Masterclass at Fibre Forum

I will be teaching a master class at the renowned Geelong Fibre Forum, a weeklong extravaganza at Geelong Grammar from September 24. For info go to – https://taftainc.com.au/

As a participant of my workshop you will have the opportunity to consider the concepts of inner and outer layers of self when creating a double basket. Whilst making two forms and bringing them together to create one basket you may want to reflect on protection and expression of the self. Perhaps you will share your thoughts with others if the opportunity arises…

The workshop will focus on making and developing a range of techniques, starting with rusting fabrics and cordage. This will lead to making a coiled basket using a range of recycled patterned fabrics that will be provided. Participants will be shown how to create a complex and unique colour scheme, when coiling a basket. A circular wooden base will be provided, and wide strips of fabric will be used, so that baskets are coiled in a day or so. This is an adaption to the basketry technique of coiling which can be very time consuming.

Chicken wire (or mesh) will then be used to construct a form that hugs the outside of the coiled basket. Pliable branches or vines can be lashed to the framework to create an outer basket that protects the inner one. Lashing is a technique to hold things in place securely, in this case we will use copper wire to lash natural materials onto the metal framework. Other materials and techniques will be provided by the tutor to embellish this outer form. For example, finely split flax can be stitched onto the wire framework to make an intricate outer basket.

All materials will be provided. Natural materials such as mile-a-minute, silver birch and flax will be available, as well as information about how to source and prepare these natural materials for use in basketry.
