Since Late 2014 I have been teaching adults basketry techniques that I have learned through the development of my art practice for over a decade. In 2007 I joined the Basketmakers of Victoria and have appreciated the generous and knowledgable help of people involved in this community organisation in formal workshops and via more informal conversations.
This photo shows a group of us proudly displaying our willow laundry baskets at the conclusion of a workshop held by Jed Gillian at the Basketmakers of Victoria in 2016.
In 2016 one of my basketry students, Georgie Williams was inspired to write about the diverse uses for and characteristics of willow. She was prompted by a musical colleague who sent an instrumental tune entitled “Willow”. Georgie turned her musings into a song which is performed by her band the Winterberries. The lyrics can be read bellow…
It wasn’t long after Georgie wrote this song that she attended my random weaving workshop in November and explored the sculptural properties of willow when making a basket. I then heard her perform the song at the Mollongghip Community Hall so there was a lovely interplay of creativity and ideas.
