The second weekend of Craft Lab, more interesting conversations and the participatory art work continued to grow! In fact, we had so many people participate that I think these two Underground Root Divisions look complete! What do you think? Next time this work is exhibited I may need to make another Underground Root Division, so two can become three.
Thanks to Gayl for helping volunteers make bundles on Saturday. I helped people make bundles on Sunday, a very dedicated child made about 4 bundles so I gifted her a small box of fibre and a needle to take home and continue her weaving.
Next door to my alcove Jeremy Parker was cooking up an alchemists storm, the aroma of weld reminded me of honey infused with botanicals. Glorious! He used some of my raffia and corn husks to make colour dying trials. The yellow was dyed using buckthorn berries and turmeric and the orange using madder.
I also wanted to show the small twined baskets that I was demonstrating throughout Craft Lab. Most of them had combungi bullrush stakes, with a range of strappy fibres for weavers such as jonquil, day lily, iris and/or red hot poker. I was using a plaited base and simple border, combungi stakes were cut short or left longer as a decorative fringe. Lovely spending time demonstrating these baskets and meeting old and new friends at Craft Lab 2024!

WOW looks like you had a fantastic weekend Jodie with lots of participants using a diverse combination of plant materials…. Looks like you will need a larger wall next time for your underground root extensions!!well done 😀❤️
Congratulations Jodie, your Lab was FAB! 👏
