Day 2 – Making a Double Basket

Today was a relaxing day when things flowed as in a dream. The fabric and threads were unpacked from the steamer. After soaking in a diluted bicarbonate solution to neutralise acid and stop the rusting process, they were washed with mild soapy water and hung up to dry. I then demonstrated an alternate coiling technique using arum lily. After lunch the group were mesmerised while random weaving hardenbergia (happy wanderer) for 2 hours straight. Passers by stopped to watch the weaving and have a look at the “Double Baskets”. At 3pm we stopped for a water break and to visit the studio of Dijanne Cevaal where her students were stitching ‘Traveller Blankets’. After the day of making I was one of 3 (as well as Dawn Edwards and Kim Thittichai) to give Artist Talks. The day ended with an Artist’s Market when 17 vendors presented their wares for sale. Lovely bespoke things from Japanese fabric to jewellery made of recycled plastic and the inner tube of bike tyres! A wonderful day!
