Plant fibre collection – invitation to learn how.

I have an annual cycle of plant fibre collection that keeps me busy year round. It takes dedication to keep track of what plant is ready for harvest. Then the drying and storing of plant fibre correctly so that it is at its best when rehydrated for weaving.

I have just finished harvesting the last of the willow for the year. The leaves have started to grow as it comes out of dormancy. The willow has been trimmed, organised into sizes and stored in buckets of water ready for basketry workshops I will facilitate over the next couple of months. See pictures below of willow being trimmed and sorted in my new shed!

I would like to invite you to Plant Walk and String Making workshops I am running over the next few months to share my knowledge about plant fibre for basketry. Come and gain skills so you can enjoy the abundance of the plant world, that shares its bountiful fibre with us to utilise in craft work.

Saturday November 16 at the Rare Trades Centre in Ballarat, book by following the link – https://www.raretradescentre.com.au/events/plant-walk/

Saturday February 15 at the Plant Craft Cottage for Friends of Royal Botanic Gardens. Booking for the February workshop will be available closer to the time via the FRBGM website at – https://www.rbgfriendsmelbourne.org/whats-on/

  1. Hi Jodie

I would like to do the cloche basket course at the Botanical Gardens….I am a member of BOV, so know the basics but never made a cloche…will this be suitable for me?

    Regards Michele

    1. Yes, you are most welcome to enrol! Have you been to the Plant Craft Cottage before? It is a gorgeous way to spend the day in one of the oldest buildings in the gardens.
